- Isolate the immersion heater by switching the mains isolator off.
- Switch the immersion heater mcb's off or remove fuses.
- Check mcb's and contactors for discolouration.
- Check terminal connections for tightness.
- Check condition of cables.
- Remove the immersion heater cover.
- Check for signs of leaks.
- Check insulation resistance.
- Check connections of busbars and mains cable terminals.
- Check condition and tightness of earth cables.
- Check element resistance from phase to neutral when connected in Star or phase to phase when connected in delta.
- Check operation of any thermostats fitted in the immersion heater head.
- Replace the immersion heater cover.
- Re-energise the immersion heater.
The immersion heater element surface condition should be checked when the calorifier manway is removed for annual inspection. Scale should be removed by using a soft brush.
