Immersion Heater Maintenance

  1. Isolate the immersion heater by switching the mains isolator off.
  2. Switch the immersion heater mcb's off or remove fuses.
  3. Check mcb's and contactors for discolouration.
  4. Check terminal connections for tightness.
  5. Check condition of cables.
  6. Remove the immersion heater cover.
  7. Check for signs of leaks.
  8. Check insulation resistance.
  9. Check connections of busbars and mains cable terminals.
  10. Check condition and tightness of earth cables.
  11. Check element resistance from phase to neutral when connected in Star or phase to phase when connected in delta.
  12. Check operation of any thermostats fitted in the immersion heater head.
  13. Replace the immersion heater cover.
  14. Re-energise the immersion heater.

The immersion heater element surface condition should be checked when the calorifier manway is removed for annual inspection. Scale should be removed by using a soft brush.
